A HOUSE OF MOLECH

Guest post by The Rev. P.J. Southam

The Bible teaches us that one of the false gods vying for the allegiance of God’s people was Molech.  Molech was a Canaanite underworld god.  Those who worshiped Molech sometimes burned their infant children as human sacrifices.  God’s people are commanded not to do this.  Leviticus 18:21 tells us “You shall not give any of your children to devote them by fire to Molech, and so profane the name of your God.”  These sacrifices took place in the Hinnom valley, just outside of Jerusalem, the city God chose that his name would be there.  When I pilgrimaged to Israel my group visited the Hinnom valley, within sight of the temple mount.  Here is a holy place and an unholy place, close together geographically, yet vastly far apart in holiness and godliness.
I was reminded of the valley of Hinnom and the child sacrifices to Molech when I learned of the First Presbyterian Church in Ogdensburg, N.Y.  Since the late 1960s that church has hosted a clinic for Planned Parenthood.  First they hosted it in the fellowship hall within their church building.  Later they have hosted it in an office building which the church owns right next door to the church.
PlannedParenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider, killing over 300,000 pre-born babies created in the image of God every year.[i] The Planned Parenthood affiliate in Ogdensburg offers referrals for abortion. The  pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Ogdensburg, Laurena Will, has said that one of her goals and the goal of the church she serves is to “keep abortion safe and legal”.[ii]  Abortion is big business for Planned Parenthood, and they encourage it.  Abby Johnson was formerly director for a Planned Parenthood facility in Texas, before she received salvation.  In her testimony she says that at staff meetings they were directed to encourage abortion rather than the alternative of live birth because abortion brought in revenue. [iii] This is very sinful, and very sad.
How safe was legal abortion for Jennifer Morbelli, who recently was killed in Maryland after a legal abortion?  How safe is legal abortion for all of the children created in the image of God who never get to be born?  Abortion, legal or not, is never safeInduced abortion is not as safe as live birth.
A holy place hosting an unholy place should be an aberration in a Christian denomination.  Sadly, it is not.  The great reformer Martin Luther once said that the place where the devil is most active is within the church.  Here is one instance of his activity.  General Assemblies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have created policy statements that do not condemn the killing of pre-born babies created in the image of God.  The Board of Pensions not only covers abortion for its plan members, but has admitted to paying for such procedures.  The “big tent” of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) includes a tabernacle for Molech, and the First Presbyterian Church in Ogdensburg is a house of Molech.
I share this information with you because if you are reading this article, now you know.  This darkness has been brought to light.  What this church and its pastor are doing is wrong.  I rebuke them in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and call them to repentance.  I also call all who are reading this article to prayer.
Let us pray:  Most good and kind Heavenly Father, the Lord and Giver of life:  Grant your grace to me, a wretched sinner.  Search my heart, and bring me to repentance.  Remove any plank from my eye, so that I may love my brothers and sisters who have specks in their eyes.  I pray for a change of heart for Laurena Will, for this congregation, and for all who deny the image of God in those whom you have created and are forming in their mother’s wombs.  Grant that I may not only have a pure heart on these matters, but grant me opportunity to love and care for with words and deeds those who are in error, those who are in desperation, those who are friendless, and those who are in need.  Bring life and that in abundance, that all in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and elsewhere may turn from Molech and turn to you.  All this I pray through Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior.  Amen.

  1. Central U.M.C. of Detroit, the original Methodist church of the city, has or had a Planned Parenthood clinic on their property in the 1990's. I saw it from the PeopleMover and later drove over to confirm what I saw. it was in an auxiliary building along with other store fronts like their thrift store. Church office confirmed that they did own the building.

  2. If you are raised to believe you are totally depraved and to believe you're elect and cannot lose your salvation by sinning, or even earn any punishment while retaining your salvation (i.e. rejection of purgatory and similar things), then of course you'll both commit fornication and have abortions. Its common sense. Calvinism leads to abortion.

    1. Hello James.
On the surface it appears that your comment is an attempt to be a provocative slap at one branch of Protestant Christianity. Not every Christian is a Calvinist and I accept that. If you would like to have a thoughtful conversation about theology and issues like abortion I will do so. We can figure out a way to do that. I decline however to trade barbs back and forth online through these short comment threads. Thank you for reading the piece I wrote. May God bless your days and your deeds.
